The 5.18 Memorial Exhibition Hall @Cultural Complex Station

In My travel in Korea on 05/11/2017 by catherineyylam Tagged: , ,

As i stayed close to the Cultural Complex Station 문화전당역 Exit 2, i bumped into this mini exhibition at the Exit 3 when i unintentionally passed by.  Though of small scale and without popularity, it is interesting to see that the space in the underground station is well utilised.

Mudeungsan Area Geopark, Mudeungsan National Park @Gwangju

In My travel in Korea on 04/11/2017 by catherineyylam Tagged: , , ,

This is not only a National Park but also a Geological Park.  It has the largest colonnade in the world, and the highest-density of the block stream in South Korea.  In autumn, these all blend with colourful foliages, contribute extra uniqueness.  For more info about its geological value, please see here.

There are two entrances of the park.   If you intend to go to Neutjae늦재 foliage tunnel which is a beautiful place,  it is better to take the entrance at Wonhyosa visitor center 원휴사 입구/ 원휴분소 .  The park officials there are friendly, they would recommend and discuss the optimum route with you.  Moreover, there are many restaurants serving various famous Jeollanam-do전라남도 traditional food near the entrance.

Another entrance is at the Jeungsimsa visitor center 증심사 입구.  It is at the bottom of the mountain, so it would be warmer.  Similar to the Bukhansan National Park, there are lots of hiking gears shops, convenience stores, restaurants etc.  There are also a mini library at the bus terminal and facilities for shoe-cleaning which i appreciate much.

Wonhyosa visitor center

Jeungsimsa visitor center

The weather forecast that day (3 Nov) was rainy.  When i stepped out of the hotel,  the sun was shining so i tried my luck, changed my mind and grasped the opportunity to go hiking.  I treated it as a bonus as the rain came only when i was on the way back.  Foliages in the rain facilitated scenery with different mood.

In Korea, due to the geology, the hiking shoes would be covered by something like tiny ashes, this Park provides brushes and water, some parks would provide compressed air for cleaning.

Generally, people whom i encountered in Gwangju are very nice and friendly.

The May 18 Archives were listed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.   It is the most informative place for storing and exhibiting various audio & visual records of the 5.18 Democratisation Movement.  If you just have limited time at Gwangju, this is definitely the first choice among various 5.18 memorial sites.

Kim Daejeung Convention Centre Station @Gwangju

In My travel in Korea on 02/11/2017 by catherineyylam Tagged: , ,

On my way to the 518 Liberty Park,  i took the exit 5 at the Kim Daejeung Convention Centre Station, and i passed by this place for promoting and educating citizens about Human Rights.  This station provides space for relevant books reading, exhibitions, interactions and thoughts expressions. There are also a list and a map showing the Heritage Sites regarding Human Right in Gwangju and highlighting Gwangju as a city inclining to human right and democracy.  Actually the Kim Daejeung Convention Centre is just 8 mins on foot from this station.

May 18 Democracy Square

In Gwangju,My travel in Korea,Uncategorized on 02/11/2017 by catherineyylam Tagged: ,

At the Old City Government Office, the community was fighting for a heritage renovation project.  There was a mini exhibition at the 2/F as well.

What happened at the Democracy Square everyday  –https://catherineyylam.wordpress.com/2017/11/03/what-happened-at-518-everyday-in-gwangju/

This was one of the temporary exhibition at the Sky Garden 하늘마당 (which is closed to the 518 Democracy Square)  where many young people like resting there.  The drawings were done after the kids read relevant materials about 군함도 軍艦島 and 518 tragedy, and then expressed what they learnt.

I found that Gwangju is positioned as a city regarding democracy uprising and human rights.  There are different activities, and materials via different media facilitating their next generation to learn about this history, and the responses seem encouraging.

As we have been receiving info regarding Gwangju 518 events in various sources, i am quite curious about how the people in Gwangju or Korea think about it nowadays and what they are still requesting or fighting for.  That’s why I esp like reading those written feedbacks at various heritage sites.
